Stress – are you coping with it?
The stress response impacts us across a wide spectrum of activity and thinking. If stress is an issue for you, try taking time out to have some stress management counseling. A little coaching and guidance can make you think more clearly and work more effectively.
We might not be confronted with terrifying life-threatening events at work. But, through the action of the amygdala in our brains, even mildly stressful events induce a performance reducing emotional arousal. Thus at low levels of stress we may only be feeling mild symptoms, even so our performance is still liable to decline.
So, be aware that the usual sort of stress we experience such as irritation, worry and embarrassment still have an impact on your effectiveness. And of course more intense levels of stress such as anger, panic and depression comprehensively shut down our rational capability.
Stress impacts personal performance
Even low-grade stress influences our ability to:
- Think rationally,
- Use our long-term memory,
- Access our imagination,
- Visualize positive outcomes,
- Negotiate diplomatically,
- Empathize with colleagues and customers
- Listen attentively to feedback
- Focus on our work
And long term or chronic stress damages our health in several ways:
- High blood pressure,
- Heart problems,
- Burn out fatigue
- Chronic anxiety,
- Depression
- The suppression of the immune system
- Long term memory loss.
In other words, stress can impair our intellectual, physical and emotional performance. As a result where people are stressed it has a significant impact on the host organization.
This is why stress management counselling can be so important to transforming business performance.
